Syan aka Chenguang Ren aka Chinaman は1997年にフランスでの美術教育を終え、帰国した後
Syan returned Hong Kong in 1997 after his art education in France. He is known as the founder of the first Hong Kong based Chinese graffiti team CEA. In 2002 with other Hong Kong artists, they held the first HK Street Art exhibition. Syan is also trained, certified and known as an art curator, art critique and cultural activist. Besides his graffiti and art practices he is also known as MC Yan, one of the first Chinese rappers, interviewed by Time magazine (Asia), Newsweek magazine (Asia), CNN channel, BBC as one of the pioneers of Chinese Hip Hop.
Yasumasa Yonehara’s work as an editor in the 1990’s for magazines such as “egg” and “OUT OF PHOTOGRAPHERS“ are widely known, which continue to his photographic works both where he has been documenting and portraying the “now” of not only Tokyo but various cities in Asia. As a photographer Yonehara’s has been continuously outputting the dramatically shifting cultural values through his series of reconstructing the beauty and cuteness of girls.
Both artists are from different nationalities, but view Asian cities (Hong Kong and Tokyo) in their own distinct way, and their works are deeply influenced / dependent on the cities situation and era. Through this exhibition we aim to show the similarities and differences which bond these two completely different artists together.
